Our May campout was an experiment in spring travel. Almost two years ago, when then-Wagonmaster John Barron proposed the possibility of going to Savannah, we debated at some length before voting to go ahead and give an out-of state campout a try. No one knew what to expect, but we can now report that our visit to Savannah was a great success.
We “made camp” at the Red Gate RV Park which is part of the Red Gate Farm complex just southwest of downtown Savannah. It’s a small RV facility (just 23 sites), but offers proximity to all that makes Savannah a great destination. The Clubhouse offered a comfortable, casual, airconditioned environment for our activities. Hosts Ken and Mary Ann Long were joined by Paul and Linda Maddox (who are their next-door neighbors in real life!). They provided us with an outstanding array of meals and activities considering that the Clubhouse did not even have a sink, let alone a ‘fridge or stove.
As has become common, almost two- thirds of the fourteen participating rigs were already onsite by Sunday afternoon – the remainder joined us on Monday. Many of us took advantage of the free day on Monday to explore downtown and the surrounding area. Of course, we returned to Red Gate in time for a 4:00PM Happy Hour with great snacks provided by the attendees. As is our custom, Monday’s dinner was “on your own” and several of us headed out to the area restaurants while others stayed back to enjoy Red Gate. Several of us gathered for a campfire next to the Clubhouse in the evening.
Tuesday was also largely a free day so that we could enjoy downtown Savannah. Some of us took advantage of the Old Town Trolley system, letting them shuttle us around town for the day. The river front shops were fun to explore and the shipping traffic on the river was fascinating. Those container ships are HUGE! We all returned to Red Gate in time for a combined 5:30PM Happy Hour/Dinner of “heavy” hors d’oeuvres which was well-received by all. WOW – there was a lot of food! Game night followed with playing card Bingo led by Linda Maddox. Fun!!
Wednesday, we enjoyed a lovely pancake breakfast with all the trimmings. Expert “flipper” Ken Long made great ‘cakes for us. Breakfast was followed by the monthly chapter meeting which was led by Past President Jeff Roudebush and Treasurer Chuck Smalley. Thanks to Carol Horner for taking minutes. See those minutes for details. We were then free to enjoy the area during the afternoon, returning to Red Gate in time for a 4:30PM Happy Hour (again, great snacks!) followed by Taco Night at 6:00PM. Our hosts presented us with taco beef and pulled chicken along with all the fixin’s to build super tacos. Yum!! Games again followed, this time leading us through candy bar trivia! The prizes, of course, were candy bars!
Thursday morning came all too quickly as we enjoyed a continental breakfast and said our goodbyes for the summer. We wish all safe travels and look forward to gathering again in the fall!
