The Three Rivers Winnies gathered at the Tionesta Recreation Area Campground August 1-5, 2018 for our monthly gathering. Those in attendance were the Baker, Cables, Darden, McKnight, Mueller, Pomilio, and Smith families. During our stay we were able to tour and explore the rich history of Forrest, Venango, Crawford, and Warren Counties.
On Thursday August 2, 2018 we toured Pit Hole City which was a short-lived Oil producing town, followed by a tour at the Drake Well Museum. Later that day the Host provided dinner that was complimented by numerous deserts brought by the fellowship.
Then on Friday August 3, 2018 a hearty breakfast at the campsite before viewing the treasures at “Simpler Times Museum” and a stop for ice cream before returning to camp. A repeat dining experience on Friday night followed by a fire lulled us all off to bed early.
Lastly Saturday August 4, 2018 was our primary reason for coming to this area was to view a WWII reenactment in its 10th year of production of “The Bridge of Remagen”. The town, the people of Tideoute, PA. and the bridge that comes across the Allegheny River between State Rt 62 to Rt 127 serves as the back drop to such a significant event during WWII. The battle for this bridge during the period of March 7-25, 1945 in Germany resulted in a victory for the Allies to secure this bridge over the Rhine River.
Our Saturday evening dinner at Hunters Station was attended by all including our groups treasurer Jim Stranford and former WIT members Jim and Betty Marshall. Funny how all the chatter seemed to diminish once the food was served.
